The 35th edition of Golden Rose Bulgarian Feature Film Festival 2017

The 35th edition runs from 30 September until 7 October 2017 in Varna. Organisers: Bulgarian National Film Center in collaboration with Bulgarian National Television and Bulgarian National Film Archive. The earliest edition of Golden Rose was held in 1961 as a Festival of Bulgarian Film. Back then, the Special Award went to We Were Young by Binka Zheliazkova (writer Hristo Ganev).

A total of 43 features and shorts made in 2016 will compete at this year’s edition of Golden Rose. Of them, 17 of the latest Bulgarian features will vie for the Golden Rose Award, the Special Award of the City of Varna and six other prizes in the categories Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Female Lead, Best Male Lead and Best Debut Feature. Here are some of the competition titles in the official selection: Directions by Stephan Komandarev, ¾ by Ilian Metev, Voevoda by Zornitsa Sophia Popgantcheva, Light Thereafter by Konstantin Bojanov, Lilly the Little Fish by Yassen Grigorov.

The official selection includes 26 shorts such as Cat in the Wall by Mina Mileva & Vesela Kazakova, Identification by Toma Waszarow, Nights of a Lonely Messenger by Andrey Koulev.

Open Horizons experimental and innovative films programme presents 13 shorts and 1 feature or a total of 14 films.

This year, special screenings of highly acclaimed minority Bulgarian coproductions will be held to present seven movies to the Bulgarian audiences, five features and two shorts, winners of a number of international prizes. Here are some of the features: King of the Belgians (Venice ’16 – “Orizzonti” Competition; Rotterdam ‘17 – Dutch Film Critics’ Award, nominated for Lux Prize 2017); Son  of Sofia на София (Tribeca IFF, Best Film Award; European Film Awards selection), Western (Cannes Film Festival – Un Certain Regard; LUX Film Prize Official selection; Toronto IFF Official Selection).

Accompanying programmes of events also usher spectators.
